KnotBoating ("we", "us", or "our") is operated by KnotSystems. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and protect your information when you use the KnotBoating mobile app and website (collectively, the "Service").
By using the Service, you agree to the collection and use of information in accordance with this policy.
Information We Collect
Account Information
When you create an account, we collect your name and email address. This information is used to authenticate you and personalise your experience.
Vessel & Trip Data
We collect information you enter about your vessels, including make, model, year, and technical specifications. During trips, we collect GPS location data (latitude, longitude, speed, and heading) to record your route. This data is stored on our secure servers and is only accessible to you and any crew members you have invited.
Photos & Documents
We store photos and documents you upload to the Service, including vessel documents and log entry photos. These files are stored securely on Amazon Web Services (AWS) S3.
Location Data
The KnotBoating iOS app requests access to your device location, including background location access, to record GPS trip routes while you are underway. Location data is only collected when you actively start a trip and stops when you end the trip. We do not sell or share your location data with third parties.
Shore-Side Sharing
When you choose to share your live location with a shore-side contact, a time-limited link is generated that allows that person to view your vessel's position on a map. This feature is entirely opt-in and captain-controlled. Share links can be deactivated at any time.
Crash & Error Reporting
We use Sentry (sentry.io) to collect crash reports and error diagnostics from the app and website. Sentry may collect device type, operating system version, and app version alongside error details. Sentry does not receive your name, email, GPS data, or vessel information. You can review Sentry's privacy policy at sentry.io/privacy.
How We Use Your Information
We use the information we collect to:
- Provide and operate the Service
- Record and display your trip history, maintenance records, and vessel documents
- Send notifications you have opted into (maintenance reminders, document renewal alerts)
- Diagnose and fix crashes and errors
- Respond to your support requests
We do not sell your personal information to third parties.
Data Storage & Security
Your data is stored on Amazon Web Services (AWS) infrastructure in the United States. We use industry-standard encryption in transit (HTTPS/TLS) and at rest. Access to production data is restricted to authorised personnel only.

Data Retention
We retain your data for as long as your account is active. GPS trip points are retained for 90 days in our database and then archived to secure long-term storage. You may request deletion of your account and all associated data at any time by contacting us.

Depending on your location, you may have the right to:
- Access the personal data we hold about you
- Request correction of inaccurate data
- Request deletion of your data
- Object to or restrict processing of your data

Children's Privacy
The Service is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of significant changes by updating the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. Continued use of the Service after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
